My name is Zoltan J Szabo (a.k.a. YANCHICA) . I live near to London in the UK but I am originally from Hungary.

BACKGROUND

For me image making started with drawing by hand when I was a child. In kindergarten I made a 3D drawing of my kindergarten classroom the way I saw it. This was in the early 70s. I scribbled on everything just to make it look different to others. No objects escaped :) .

My relationship with gadgets started with watches (our ugly green alarm clock on the shelf) but I absolutely fell in love with my father’s Russian made Zorkii 6 35mm film camera from 1966. Of course, as a child I found the mechanics of it more interesting than making images with it. The true admiration started when I understood what you can do with a camera.

As a young adult I had the opportunity to use my drawing skills and imagination together. I worked as a graphic designer in the 90’s and made decorations for shop windows, designed, and made complete business images and logos.   Photography was only a hobby for me with cheap film cameras. I never even dared to consider anything more due to the costs involved. Don’t get me wrong. Photography remains a dear hobby. However, the advancements of technology and going digital gave opportunity to a whole new world of image making. Not to mention the mobile phone with inbuilt cameras. These being everywhere started a brand new chapter. This is the reason why I created the “By Phone” album. If it is there why not enjoy it.

I started to re-discover photography 6 years ago. My first DSLR camera was an old Nikon D40 with supply teacher the internet. I collected about 120GB material during this journey. However, I did have some guidance and encouragement from a professional. My nephew was World Press winner in 2011 (https://www.worldpressphoto.org/collection/photo-contest/2011/peter-lakatos/1) His personality and decades of experience and success inspire me every day.

I tried to keep my gear ahead of my knowledge to allow constant learning and advancing. However, the rule is simple. Keep shooting…!

The success behind a photographer is not the gear. Michelangelo only needed hammer and chisel to create his David and Leonardo used a piece of canvas and some paint to make the smiling Mona Lisa. So, the core and purpose of photography for me is capturing a moment. The moment becomes a message to the future based on the feelings in the very moment and not based on the technology used in the moment.

Photography is now more than a “me time” hobby for me. It is a tool that I truly enjoy using to stop time, save the moment and travel in time and one’s imagination.
